A Surfer's Paradise
Doughmore beach is 10 mins. away and famous for the excellent surfing conditions. Doonbeg's other renowned surf spot can be found at Baltard Bay ('Riley's), which is getting more popular by the year. The bay, known as Bealicha, is a sheltered cove surrounded by spectacularly high cliffs. Five years ago visitors to the area discovered that Bealicha was an ideal location for surfing. Its rolling seas make Baltard a surfers paradise for followers of the sport. Surfers from all over Europe particularly English, Scottish, French and Irish take part in surfing competitions in Baltard Bay.
White Strand Beach

Dolphin & Bird watching
Dolphins regularly appear in the waters around Doonbeg and especially in the Shannon estuary. Tours for watching the Dolphin families take place from Kilrush Marina and from Carrigaholt. Loop Head is very popular with birdwatchers from all over the world. This popularity is due to the range of seabirds that breed here each summer (including Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Guillemots, Razorbills, Puffins and Gannets), and in particular due to the autumn passage of an amazing array of seabirds and waders. The best months are August through October, when West and NW winds blow many of the passing seabirds close to shore, so allowing excellent viewing. Seabirds regularly seen here in good numbers include Manx and Sooty Shearwaters, Storm and Leaches Petrels, and Great, Pomarine and Arctic Skuas. Sightings of Little Stints, Curlew and the American Buff-breasted Sandpiper have been made, and there are many other rare species seen from time to time from local viewing points, some of them in walking distance from the house.
Traditional Music and dance
Traditional Music and dance
Traditional Irish music is available in pubs in local villages and towns (watch out for signs in windows of pubs), weekly at the Teach Ceol on Thursdays in Kilrush in the summer; in Moyasta (festival in September ), Carrigaholt, Kilrush and the wonderful internationally renowned Willy Clancy Summer School in Miltown Malbay. It is Ireland's largest traditional music summer school, held annually in the first week in July with nearly a thousand students from every part of the world attending daily classes taught by experts in Irish music and dance. In addition, a full program of lectures, recitals, dances and exhibitions are run by the summer school. Find out more about traditional music in Clare [here...]
